Hello STUDENTS!
To start the week off we will be learning how to analyse PRIMARY and SECONDARY SOURCES.
Much of historical UNDERSTANDING is developed FROM ANALYSING SOURCES.
THE SKILL YOU LEARN IN ANALYSING SOURCES IS ONE YOU WILL USE THROUGHOUT THIS YEAR!! !!!!!!!!!!
HISTORIANS make sense of what has happened in the past from analysing historical sources!!!!
Sources are relics from the past.....
They give us information about a particular period of time......
Historical sources are classified as either primary or secondary sources!!!!
Primary sources
Primary sources are immediate!!!!
First-hand accounts of a topic!!!
From people who had a direct connection with it!!!!
Primary sources can include text, newspaper reports of witnesses, speeches, interviews, photographs, video or audio that captured the even, tools, weapons, buildings, jewellery.
Secondary sources
Secondary sources are information created after the time being studied!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They involve the study and interpretation of primary sources!!!!!!!!
They may be created by historians, but also by writers, artists, cartographers (map makers), film makers and many other people who inquire about the past as part of their occupation!!!!
Secondary sources include interpretations of the past presented as things like history books, biographies, films, articles and art exhibitions.
EXAMPLES
Let's say I were to write a letter to the principal about the misbehaviour of a student.
THAT would be a primary source since it was a first-hand account, same if someone saw me write the letter and
wrote about me writing in the letter a week later, they were there so it is a first-hand account.
NOW,
Let's say that letter was so famous that it became a movie CREATED by no one that was there in first-hand.
THIS MOVIE WAS MADE WAY PAST THE HISTORICAL EVENT, 20 YEARS LATER WHEN IT WAS NO LONGER IN PROCESS.
THAT'S A SECONDARY SOURCE!!!!
THINGS MADE AFTER THE HISTORICAL EVENT ARE SECONDARY SOURCES!!!!!
IF A MOVIE IS MADE WHEN AN EVEN IS STILL HAPPENING IT IS A PRIMARY SOURCE!!!!!
ACTIVITY -
I want you to write about something which is a Primary Source vs a Secondary Source.
You can write from personal experience.
Now that we understand primary and secondary sources more we would like you to think about what your stuff says about you. Select one object that is special to you. It could be a photograph, a cricket bat, a favourite piece of music - anything! Reflect on these questions:
What is your object?
When was it made?
Who made it?
What does it tell us about you?
In your post tell us (and you can upload a photo too) about your object. Is the account you write a primary or a secondary source? Are the accounts from others you are reading primary or secondary sources?
